Gus Nichols vs Charles V. Headrick (Missionary Baptist)
August 6, 1942
Huntsville, Alabama

(By Gaddys Ray)

Several weeks ago Charles V. Headrick, a Baptist preacher, Huntsville, Ala., challenged the churches of Christ to meet him in debate. He has boasted that we were afraid to meet him. The Lincoln church in Huntsville, accepted the challenge and invited Gus Nichols, Jasper, Ala., to meet him. The debate was held in the Lincoln church building July 14-17.

Two propositions were discussed: baptism as a condition of pardon and the prayers of alien sinners being heard without baptism. The debate was very orderly. The writer and Mr. Morrison had but little to do as moderators. Mr. Headrick made about all the little quibbles against water baptism, but these were all ably met by bro. Nichols. The public was accommodated with loud speakers, which could be heard for a great distance. Hundreds heard the debate, and the churches of Christ were well pleased with the results.
