Coleman Overby vs A. U. Nunnery (Missionary Baptist)
November 11, 1926
Westport, Tennessee

(By B. L. Douthitt)

Oct. 18-22 at Westport, Tenn.

Nunnery affirmed his church is scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice. He spent the first day quoting scripture and reading history on the origin of the Miss. Bap. church. Bro. Overby asked him how a thing can be scriptural when it is not found in the Bible or in history until the 17th century. Mr. Nunnery made no reply.

Bro. Overby asked Nunnery to name one truth that Christ taught that is peculiar to Baptists or that is taught by Baptists alone. Mr. Nunnery said that Baptist alone have "regenerated church membership." Bro. Overby showed be was wrong, Nunnery later denied saying it. Bro. Overby kept before the people the fact that Baptists do not teach the truth on anything peculiar to Baptists. On the Holy Spirit, Nunnery failed to find one thing the Holy Spirit did independent of the word of God. For 2 1⁄2 days bro. Overby affirmed that the church of which he is the true church. He made a number of scriptural arguments. Nunnery said only a word about a few and entirely ignored many.

Bro. Overby conducted his part of the debate on a high plane. He knows the gospel of Christ, loves it and preaches it with love towards all and malice towards none. He was kind with his opponent, but severely pressed him throughout the discussion. It was a glorious victory for the truth of the Bible with his experience as a debater and wonderful knowledge of the Bible. He is able to crush error and defend the truth. Brethren will not make a mistake in calling on him for debates. I consider him the best.
