W. H. Owen vs W. W. Wendham (Methodist)
October 1, 1904
Booneville, Mississippi

(By L. L. Brigance)

Near Booneville, Miss. Aug. 9-12.

Subjects: Design of baptism, infant baptism, action of baptism, salvation by faith only.

There were two conditions on which Mr. Wendham would debate. First, that only the K. J. Bible would be used. And that bro. Owen would not use any charts, blackboards or books of reference. Time allotted each man was 30 minutes.

Mr. Wendham used only 20 minutes in his first two speeches and at other times he did not use all of his time. He discussed almost every subject except the right one. On the last day he affirmed: The sinner is justified by faith only." He read some scriptures to show we are justified by faith, but not one of them hints at "faith only." Bro. Owen replied in two masterful speeches, showing that Mr. Wendham had not touched the proposition; that while we are justified by faith, it is nowhere taught that we are justified by faith only.

At noon Mr. Wendham proposed that they make no more speeches, but say a few words to the audience and quit. Bro. Owen finally agreed to two speeches of 15 minutes each. Mr. Wendham used 10 in one speech and only 5 in the other. He tried to close out with a song and a shout, but that was promptly nipped in the bud. He and his brethren looked down their noses while Owen made his last speech.

I (L. L. Brigance) preached two nights and baptized two Methodists. Many others expressed themselves as having had enough of Methodism. The debate will do good.
