H. M. Phillips vs Calvin Gregory (Baptist)
June 11, 1936
Nashville, Tennessee

(By F. B. Srygley)

The debate began at the Eleventh St. church of Christ (April 6-9) - but house too small. The Baptist had a large house nearby but refused them to use it. So they moved to Russell St. church. This shows what the leading Baptist felt about the debate. None of the prominent Baptist preachers of Nashville attended.

Mr. Gregory asked: "Do you baptize a child of God or a child of the Devil?" Bro. Phillips replied: "Who believes, according to Baptist doctrine, a child of God or child of the Devil?" Bro. Phillips said, "This is a play on words. By child of God or child of the Devil, what you are really asking is - do I baptize a lost person or a saved person? This I say, a lost person, for they are still in sin." Mr. Gregory ignored this.

Another of Gregory's main arguments was that Paul said, "Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel." Bro. Phillips showed that Paul did baptize some of the Corinthians; and , therefore, according to Gregory, Paul sinned by doing something God sent him not to do. Bro. Phillips added that when Gregory made this point, he knew that Paul was certainly not a Baptist preacher, because they baptize people. Bro. Phillips said that Gregory apparently did not know that this passage contained an ellipsis, that is, Paul was saying, "Christ sent me not to baptize (only)." He paralleled this with John 12:44. "Jesus cried and said, he that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me." By using an ellipsis Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, believeth not on me (only), but also on my Father."

The truth was taught to many folks who were members of the Lord's church.
