H. M. Phillips vs L. G. Varnado (Missionary Baptist)
March 28, 1940
Collins, Mississippi

(By J. F. Doggett)

Feb. 26-29 at Collins, Miss.

90% of the audiences had never heard a debate and the first time they had heard the truth of N.T. Christianity.

Bro. Phillips was complete master of the situation. He pressed the truth home with force, vigor and finality. He left nothing to doubt , but brought the truth clearly before the people. Mr. Varnado had been highly recommended as an orator and debater. Mr. Varnado, although claiming to be a Miss. Baptist, was driven to the position of the premillennialists on the establishment of the church - denying that the church and the kingdom were the same institution.

The debate was conducted throughout on a high plane. Anyone wishing to call bro. Phillips for work of this kind will make no mistake. He is sound in the faith, fervent in print , and eloquently able to uphold the truth at all times. It would be a great and food work if such debates could be held in every hamlet, town and city in Miss. The great majority of Baptists do not know their own doctrine and nothing will bring it to the fore like a good debate. Such a contrast will make the truth to shine. We thank bro. Phillips for his fine contribution to the spread of truth in this denomination ridden state.
