Tyndall followed the arguments on music of his brother, John W. Tyndall. Tyndall took the position that "heaven" in Revelation means the church. This got him into trouble when asked about the "angel flying in the midst of heaven" (Rev. 14:6). He said that it was generally understood among the preachers of the restoration movement that this angel "referred to and was" Alexander Campbell. This was laughable. He, in an unguarded moment, offered bro. Phillips $100 for a passage in the N.T. where "singing" in the church was mentioned. Bro. Phillips quoted Heb.2:12 and pressed him for the money.
When it was pointed out to Tyndall that his arguments all had reference to the use of instruments either in the past of the eternal future, and that he had nothing from the Bible bearing on the use of instruments under he New Covenant, he replied that the "now" and "today" were not in the proposition. Bro. Phillips reminded him that the verb of his proposition, "authorizes," was in the present tense, and asked him to what time it referred. He never would reply to this.
At the end of the debate bro. Phillips challenged Tyndall to repeat the debate in Albuquerque. This he declined to do. Brethren were delighted with bro. Phillips defense of the truth.
