W. Curtis Porter vs F. S. Gibson (Missionary Baptist)
November 29, 1934
Mangrum, Arkansas

(By Christian A. Lyles)

At Mangrum, Ark., Nov. 1934

Although Gibson has had many debates, he was no match for bro. Porter. He admitted that "Baptist Churches" are not mentioned in the scriptures, and that a thing not mentioned in the scriptures is not scriptural. He insisted that John was a Missionary Baptist preacher, because he was a preacher and was called a "Baptist." Bro. Porter showed according to that logic that Pater was a Latter-day Saint preacher, because he was a Christian (a saint) and preached in the "latter days."

Mr. Gibson said the inner man became a child of God at the point of faith, and the outer man remained a child of the devil until the resurrection. Bro. Porter then showed, that per Baptist doctrine, Baptist use the child of the devil as an instrument, for the Baptists baptize the outer man (child of the devil) to show that the inner man has become a child of God.

Mr. Gibson had his material written in a notebook from which he read. But he would become entangled in it. With bro. Porter replying so often, Mr. Gibson would say one thing in his speech and then contradict it from his seat.

Any congregation that needs am an to defend the truth in a Christian, yet uncompromising manner, will do well to call bro. Porter.
