W. Curtis Porter vs H. A. Thompson (Missionary Baptist)
January 28, 1936
Weatherford, Texas

(By Christina Lyle)

Jan. 5 - 12 General church propositions.

Mr. Thompson was to have affirmed first four nights and bro. Porter the last four. But instead of affirming, Thompson spent his time replying to scriptures he expected bro. Porter later to use. He made a half hearted attempt to set up the Baptist church in Matt.10, but made the mistake of saying the first business meeting of the church is recorded in Matt. Chapter 5. Bro. Porter explained that according to that reasoning the church had a business meeting before they had a church. Later Mr. Thompson tried to establish the church on the mountain when Christ was transfigured. It was such a movable institution that it seemed to be a tabernacle instead of a church. Mr. Thompson affirmed very little Baptist doctrine and replied to very few of bro. Porter's affirmations, but his personal conduct was good.

Later report by Curtis Porter - Feb.6, 1936
Mr. Thompson is an average debater, but determined not to discuss some points of Baptist doctrine. I feel they will be willing to make an affair of it.
