The discussion at Pleasant Shade, Smith Co, Tenn., between N. W Proffitt and C. D. Massey of the Miss. Bap. Church - May 18 for 4 days.
The first two days were given to the discussion of prayer for the remission of sins, Massey affirming: "I asked Mr. Massey to give one example, or one command from Christ or the apostles where sinners were commanded to pray for the remission of sins and to expect it before baptism. He gave Simon's case in Acts 8:22. I said that Simon believed also as the other Samaritans, and you say the believer is saved, and hence we both say Simon had been saved. This is not a command to the sinner to pray for the remission of sins before and without water baptism. I affirmed that baptism to the penitent believer is unto the remission of past sins. He denied. I asked him to reconcile Matt. 26:28 and Acts 2:30 with his position. He could not do so; but asserted that "for the remission of sins" in Acts 2:38 was not "in order to" remission of sins, as in Matt. 26:28. However, according to the Greek language this is obviously false.
The debate was well attended and fine order prevailed. Mr. Massey is very pleasant and is to be complimented; but his expert dodging and quibbling deserves the severest rebuke. Many people heard the truth for the first time.
