Franklin T. Puckett vs Mrs. Ralph Waldo Emerson (Christian Church)
February 27, 1941
Cotter, Arkansas

(By Joe H. Blue)

Feb. 6-7 at Cotter, Ark.

Mrs. Emerson is affiliated with the digressive element known as the Christian Church. She affirmed: The right of as woman to publicly preach the gospel in the general assembly of the church, and the acceptability of instrumental music in the church worship. Bro. Puckett denied both propositions.

The debate lasted two nights, one night given to each proposition. Mrs. Emerson wanted 45 minutes to open up each of her propositions and 30 minutes for rebuttal arguments. But her first speech lasted only 30 minutes and her second speech 24 minutes. Also, she was unable to use all of her time in either speech of in the second proposition. The poor woman was helpless, and it seemed that she lost confidence in herself. There was only one thing she could prove, and that was she failed to prove her propositions. Mrs. Emerson was invited to repeat the debate at Jonesboro, Ark., but she did not accept.

Bro. Puckett was master of the situation in every respect. He did a nice, clean job of it, and the brethren were all well pleased with the defense he made of the truth.
