J. F. Reese vs J. W. Brewer (Missionary Baptist)
February 7, 1929
Billstown, Arkansas

(By John G. Reese)

Held at Billstown, 10 miles south of Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Dec. 16-19, 1928.

The debate was well attended by people all over Pike County. Bro. Reese established church beginning at Pentecost. Mr. Brewer ignored bro. Reese's chart and barely noticed his arguments.

On 2nd day March brewer affirmed that the H.S. exercises a power separate and apart from the written or spoken word. He took Isaac, born of Abraham and Sarah in their old age, and other similar cases, and tried to show by them that the H.S. operates on the heart of a sinner in conversion independent of the word of God. Bro. Reese showed that these were already children of God; and that the proposition was the H.S. operating on the sinner independent of the word of God.

The case of Saul was taken up next, and Mr. Brewer said Saul preached before his baptism, and that he did not pray to be saved, but prayed because he was saved. Bro. Reese took away every argument he made on the N.T. conversions: Lydia, Cornelius, the jailer.

Bro. Reese affirmed baptism for remission of sins. Mr. Brewer quibbled over Acts 2:38, etc. His failure could be seen by his own people. On apostasy bro. Reese gave him six questions on, "Can a child of God lie?" Mr. Brewer was silent as the tomb. Brewer's own people saw how utterly he failed all the way through the debate. Some admitted that he was not equal to the occasion. J. A. Copeland moderated for Reese.
