B. F. Rhodes vs Daniel Sommer (Bible-College question)
March 28, 1907
Odessa, Missouri

(By J. N. Armsrtrong)

The Bible School question at Odessa, Mo., Feb.18 for two days of tour hours each.

Bro. Sommer is a debater of considerable experience and has preached for 37 years. Bro. Rhodes id 37 years old and has never debated before. Bro. Sommer had the advantage in years. Bro. Rhodes had the advantage of truth.

Sommer did not meet the real issue. He said it was sacrilegious to use the word "Bible" in naming a school. His other argument was over "misusing the Lord's money." He made no attempt at defining the "Lord's money." Nor the word "Bible" other than to indict us for using it. But not one single attempt did he make to prove his charge against us. Rhodes pressed him hard for proof. He just promised to take it up at the two days debate at Hale, Mo. where the debate as to be repeated. Some brethren came 200-300 miles to hear Sommer. They went home dissatisfied. They could not attend the second debate at Hale.

Sommer made his best argument to show that we were mercenary and begged for money, excluding poor students who could not pay. He made personal attacks on us and our work. He said, kneeling in prayer and belief in special providence were doctrines peculiar to Bible school work. He made fun of college degrees, calling them pompous titles.

At Hale, Mo. the debate was much the same. Sommer is dictatorial and self-willed. More than once in the discussion he said all truth was on his side and all wrong was on our side.
