At Siloam Baptist meeting house 3 miles east of Westmoreland, Tenn.
Debate was well attended, good order and best feelings prevailed. Speakers in most cases respected each other. Each morning the day's work was entered into with songs of praise to God and prayers of thanksgiving for God's blessings. Each day a bountiful dinner was spread.
Bro. Rogers affirmed: Baptism for the remission of sins for 2 days. He introduced a number of scriptures which sustained his proposition without a doubt. I wish to commend him to the brethren in general as a good man, a consistent Christian, a good preacher and an average debater. I have been associated with him in his home and elsewhere, and have learned to love him; and I pray that the brethren may hold up his hands for he is worthy.
On the 3rd and 4th days Mr. Sloan affirmed: The scriptures teach that the repenting sinner is saved at faith. He introduced scriptures commonly used by Baptists in support of his proposition. He defined "at faith" to be the moment one believes. He said, with reference to what he was pleased to style "saving faith;" "They never had it before, they never had it a minute, and will never have it again." He denied the genuineness of Mark 16:9-20. He is skillful in the defense of Baptist doctrine.
This debate was mainly conducted on a high plane, hence I predict that good will result from it. There were only a few preachers on either side in attendance.
