H. A. Rogers vs Mr. Long (Baptist)
March 3, 1921
Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada

(By L. L. McGill)

Debate closed Feb.14 at Weyburn Saskatchewan. After the debate one man voiced his opinion of many: "I have learned more about the Bible at this discussion that I ever knew before."

General church propositions were discussed. Mr. Long affirmed: "The baptism of the H.S. bestowed on the church at Pentecost, as an abiding comforter, was unlimited in its application as to time and place."

There was a noticeable difference in the methods of the two men. Mr. Long entered the debate with a complete set of printed texts and arguments. Bro. Rogers depended entirely on his memory. Long would dodge the issue and divert the minds of the people by misrepresentation and misapplied definitions of words. Bro. Rogers would correct and expose his tactics, quoting for evidence scripture upon scripture.

The controversy was comparatively free from personalities, although Mr. Long on several occasions cast personal reflection upon his opponent which would have been better unsaid. It is a commendable fact that bro. Rogers confined his remarks to the subject at hand. The Bible was the only standard of evidence, and the audience was the jury. The verdict of those not connected with either church seems to have said: "Rogers has the truth and can ably defend it." Long's people claim him as one of their ablest defenders, having participated in several debates before this. Bro. Rogers has asked Long to meet him again this summer, but thus far has declined.
