H. A. Rogers vs William Louis (Russellite)
March 1, 1923
Brighouse Hall, Lulu Island, British Columbia

(By John Mallory)

A debate between Mr. Wm. Louis (Russellite) and H. A. Rogers at Brighouse Hall, on nights of Jan. 22-23.The debate was signed for 4 nights, two hours each night.

The 1st proposition was: The kingdom of heaven of Matt. 3:2 was set up on he day of Pentecost." Bro. Rogers affirmed. On the 2nd proposition Mr. Louis (was to affirm): "All there is to man is mortal." Bro. Rogers denied.

The hall was well filled with anxious listeners. Bro. Rogers led off in his aff. speech in a way which declared his ability to handle the subject in hand, making his arguments and abundantly proving them with scriptures from memory. Mr. Louis spent 15 minutes of his 30 minute speech and had not touched a single argument. Bro. Rogers' moderator (J.L. Saunders) addressed the chairman, calling Mr. Louis to the issue at hand. Louis said, "I am coming to it." but he did not. Three times he was called to he subject, but he rambled and beat around the bush.

On the 2nd night bro. Rogers said he would not try to get Louis to answer and that is his disputant would note his arguments, in even a fair measure, he would he would be willing to continue the debate for the other two nights, ans if he did not, he would ask the Russellites to get another man to replace him. He would wait six days for his new opponent. Mr. Louis was so snowed under that he used up 10 minutes before sitting down. The debate closed. The Russellites did not get another man.

Bro. Rogers in his summary speech the 2nd and last night, brought out so many convincing arguments, quoting chapter and verse so rapidly and from memory that he claimed the admiration of the almost breathless that rowed the building. The arguments were so well arranged and convincingly made (by chapter and verse) that all could see that they were invincible and unrefutable. Russellism is well quashed on the island. Sixteen were baptized later.
