There had been a Miss. Bap. church there for years - no church of Christ. Bro. Sanford baptized enough Baptists to start a church of Christ. Baptists feel they must stop inroads on the Bap. church.
Thompson affirmed: The church of which I, J. S. Thompson, am a member, known as the Missionary Baptist Church, possesses all the Bible and historical characteristics to be the church of Christ. Mr. Thompson said Baptists believed: the church was set up during the life of Christ; total depravity; direct work of the H.S.; the true order of repentance and faith; new birth; impossibility of apostasy; restricted communion; and save by grace and not by works.
Bro. Sanford: "I am here to deny that the Baptist church is the church of Christ. Mr. Thompson cannot find a Baptist church before 1611. Mr. Thompson said: "John baptized Jesus, therefore, Jesus was a Baptist. The Baptists have been called by various names, but they were Baptist. If the sinner has faith, there is not room for repentance; for he must have repentance before faith, for Paul says we are justified by faith. This is Baptist doctrine. John's baptism was Christian baptism." Bro. Sanford exposed each of these errors thoroughly.
Mr. Thompson: "The disciples were with Christ from the beginning. They were a working church." Bro. Sanford: "Mr. Thompson asks me where I baptize the children of God or the children of the devil, as if I am compelled to do either. The sinner is leaving the services of the devil; he seizes the life line, and if he holds fast, he will be saved." The bro. Sanford gave Baptist scholars on Acts 2:38. Good order and good feelings prevailed.
