W. A. Sisco vs O. A. Utley (Baptist)
February 8, 1906
Benton Co., Tennessee
(By Bertram Sarrett)

Nov.7, 1905 at Matlock's Chapel on Eagle Creek in Benton, Co., Tenn. - Baptism and establishment of the church discussed.

Bro. Sisco's affirmative argument on the design of baptism was all that could be desired. Mr. Utley took the time- worn, ridiculous position that faith alone saves, saying a man was saved when he believed "eis" Christ. IN answer to this bro. Sisco showed that from John 9:30 "many believed on ('eis') him" but would not confess him. Bro. Sisco drew a circle on the blackboard, placed these scriptures in the circle, and repeatedly demanded and answer on them. Mr. Utley made not the slightest quibble on them, thereby virtually surrendering his contention on "faith only."

Mr. Utley's contention of the kingdom question was equally as illogically and unbiblical. He tried to establish the church beginning in Lk. 6:13. Bro. Sisco presented a map of Palestine and showed that Christ was at that time in the region of the Sea of Galilee, which was about 70 miles from Jerusalem or "Zion," where the prophet said the church should be established. This exploded Mr. Utley's theory and took him by complete surprise. Seeing himself in this predicament and knowing he must make at last some effort to escape, Mr. Utley then said Christ organized the church on the mount when he called his 12 apostles and then they went to Jerusalem.

This debate grew out of Mr. Utley's continual abuse of the disciples around Matlocks Chapel. He went so far in his abuse as to make this request of the Baptists: "Call them 'Campbellites' or 'hypocrites,'either one you like, when you meet them in the road for that is what they are."

Mr. Utley is not a strong man in debate. He cannot make a logical argument nor does he know how to answer one when confined to rules of order. Deprived of nicknames and ridicule he amounts to nothing. Some people can't tell noise from argument and think he is a debater. They indorse Utley and that is why we debate him. Otherwise, no attention would be given him.
