David Lipscomb's comments on above declined debate
December 11, 1902

(By David Lipscomb)

It has been suggested that the brethren should endorse bro. Srygley to debate with J. N. Hall, the Baptist debater. This suggestion ha s not called out a very hearty response. Lest some should misunderstand this failure to speak out, I explain. I am sure that there is not a brother in the state who would not cheerfully indorse bro. Srygley to debate with Hall if he thought there was any probability of a debate; but it is well known that Hall will not debate with him, and it is useless to talk of it. Hall, in some of this letters, speaks ill of bro. Srygley as a man. Now, if Hall can find one-tenth as much laid to bro. Srygley's charge by his brethren and others, either affecting his moral character or church standing, as Hall's brethren charge against him in both relations, he might be borne with; but a man so besmirched by his own brethren should be modest in talking of others. The trouble is, Hall is afraid of bro. Srygley; he dreads his combination of truth and humor.
