F. B. Srygley vs I. N Penick (Missionary Baptist)
July 30, 1903
Location unknown

(By John R. Williams)

The Srygley - Penick debate, July 7-10, closed Fri. Night. It was a first class discussion from start to finish. It was a high-toned, honorable discussion, such as will increase the study of the Bible and reverence for the word. The debate was brought about by a challenge from the Baptists to our people and not by a personal challenge by either disputants. Such debate generally do good. There is a class of sectarian men calling themselves "preachers" who are continually popping up and challenging us for a debate, for no other purpose than notoriety - to be called "debaters." Bro. Srygley was challenged by such a person at Hornbeak at the close of the debate there. Notoriety is often sought at the expense of truth. Let us be careful with whom we debate.
