F. B. Srygley vs Otto A. Utley (Missionary Baptist)
January 27, 1910
Dancy, MIssissippi

(By G. C. Brewer)

I. N. Penick signed to meet bro. Srygley at Dancy, Miss., Nov. 30, 1909. Penick failed to show up and gave no good reason. Mr. Otto Utley substituted for him.

Mr. Utley would make a very good "rooter" for a football team, but ignorant of debating. It was impossible for the moderator to keep him in order. He accused bro. Srygley of not knowing languages. Bro. Srygley called attention of Utley's blunders. For example, Utley said, "Christ died for you and me." But, according to Utley, "for" means "because of" (Acts 2:38). Therefore, Christ died "because of" you and me."

Mr. Utley has some doggerel about "Campbellism." Bro. Srygley's moderator objected. Utley had said he could not debate if they took that away from him. He was supposed to be affirming that the Baptist church is apostolic in origin, name, doctrine and practice. We always knew that Baptist could not prove their position by the scriptures, and we knew too, they could not debate with us if forced to meet the issue; but Utley is the first one I ever heard admit it.

It makes no difference how ignorant the preacher is, if he can say "Campbellite" with a vengeance and has a good stock of slang phrases and blasphemous songs, some Baptists will indorse him and call him a great debater. Some brethren try to meet them with the same sort of matter, which is very wrong. Brethren, the cause of Christ needs no such defense. I am strictly opposed to such debating. We should meet our opponents on the issue and nowhere else. Nothing is gained if you use slang and boast.

Bro. Srygley did some good preaching in the debate and we are hopeful of good results. He debates for the benefit of his hearers and not to silence his opponent.
