F. B. Syrgley vs J. B. Briney (Christian Church - Instrumental music)
May 29, 1924
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

(By Unknown)

Debate at Oklahoma City, Okla, May 7-15, has been highly satisfactory to those who adhere to the apostolic order of things. Bro. Briney affirmed: "Instrumental music in Christian worship is scriptural."

Great crowds attended. The friends of Syrgley grew larger and larger each session but the digressive attendance fell off and became very small at the end of the debate. They did not win the great victory that the Christian Standard so loudly boasted before the debate.

Bro. Briney took the position that we may sing with or without an instrument. But bro. Syrgley had a written statement from Briney showing that he had indorsed O. E. Paune's book, and that without modification; and Payne took the position that the instrument is demanded (can not be left off). Briney tried to dodge this saying he had the right to interpret his own language. Bro. Syrgley showed that the word "psallo" could not have two means at the same place and at the same time. He then asked Briney to tell whether it meant with or without in Eph. 5:19. Briney refused to answer.

O.E. Payne on "psallo" ruined their contention. Wiser men had never reached this conclusion. Neither Sophocles, the native Greek who gave his life to the study of Greek; nor the great Henry Thayer, the noted Greek lexicographer; nor the beloved scholarly McGarvey; nor Isaac Everett, nor Hayden, nor Lard, no any other man, had made such a profound research - as O.E. Payne. The only consistent course for the diagressives is to oppose the N.T. authorities on the use of the instrument in worship or repudiate Q.E. Payne's conclusion. There is not other choice.
