G. R. Reynolds walked out on his discussion with Grover Stevens, who labored with the church at Bruceton, Tenn. This discussion came about as a result of a booklet written by Reynolds titled, "Why I Became A Baptist." He requested that some of our brethren review the booklet, which was very ably done by bro. Fred Dennis and was published in the Gospel Advocate. Bro. Stevens had been corresponding with Mr. Reynolds for a number of years, so the church here in Lenoir City brought him here from Bruceton to have a five-day discussion with Mr. Reynolds. The topics for discussion were: The church, baptism, salvation, apostasy and the Lord's supper.
All was fine until Tuesday night; then bro. Stevens began pressing Mr. Reynolds, and Reynolds began getting off the subject. But bro. Stevens kept pressing the issue. On Wed. evening Mr. Reynolds withdrew from the discussion, saying that bro. Stevens was unfair. The charge was untrue. All that bro. Stevens did was insist that Baptist teaching was false; and, of course, to a Baptist that was hard to take. Br. Stevens conducted himself as a Christian gentleman in every respect. It was simply the fulfillment of James' statement, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Bro. Stevens resisted, and the opposition fled.
Lenoir City is a mission point of Charlotte Avenue in Nashville. Only 20 members, but bright future.
