J. R. Stockard vs Waldo Nevil (Missionary Baptist)
March 1, 1928
Onion Grove, Tennessee

(By R. L. Roberts)

Dec.27-30, 1917 at Onion Grove, 7 miles north of Miland, Tenn.

Propositions: apostasy and baptism. Mr. Nevil affirmed for two says that a regenerate child of God is preserved eternally. The speakers had agreed that each should affirm one day on each proposition, but Nevil refused to do so. Bro. Stockard allowed him to affirm both days on apostasy. Bro. Stockard examined every scripture and turned them against him.

On baptism bro. Stockard showed that the great commission constituted "the keys of the kingdom;" that the apostles used these keys first at Pentecost and in every case of conversion recorded in the Bible. On Acts 2:38 Nevil admitted that "for" means "in order to," but said it is in order to a testimony of remission. Mr. Nevil first took the Miss. Baptist stand that repentance and faith are the conditions of salvation.

Then, in making an argument on Tit. 3:5, he took the Primitive Baptist stand that there are no conditions of salvation. His third position was that we are saved just like Abraham was saved under the law of Moses, basing this on Acts 15:9-11. Bro. Stockard easily showed that this was a dispute between some of the brethren as to whether the Gentiles should be circumcised and keep the law of Moses. He pressed Nevil to be circumcised and offer sacrifice as they did under the law of Moses. Mr. Nevil is very apt at quoting scriptures, but does not know how to take a passage and make an argument on it. The debate was well attended.
