W. L. Totty vs R. O. Bayer (Pentecostal - Jesus Only)
January 3, 1946
Location Unknown

(By Stanley McIvery)

W. L. Totty debated R.O. Bayer, Dec. 1945.

This was bro. Totty's second debate with Bayer, the other debate was in Muncie, Ind. a month ago. Bayer was anxious to meet the church of Christ preachers as he thought they were easily handled. But since debating bro. Totty he has changed his attitude and is reluctant to debate with us any more.

In the first debate Mr. Bayer started debating in the usual Pentecostal style, prancing and smiling; however, in this recent debate there was a marked difference in him. The cocksure attitude was gone, hardly did he smile. He was reported to be a shrewd debater, but the truth proved him to be otherwise. The arguments that bro. Totty put before Bayer were such that he was not able to answer any, and was like a drowning man, gasping at anything that would keep his head above water. But bro. Totty made everything so clear that Bayer had nothing to hold to except a few ignorant, gullible followers.

At the close of the debate Bayer was the most confused and badly defeated man I have ever seen. He had crossed, misquoted, and contradicted himself to such an extent that he seemed not to know what he had said. Bro. Totty had the final speech of the debate. He drove the truth with such force and made the teachings of Bayer look so ridiculous that one would have thought it was an open forum, and every time Bayer would jump up to say something he got deeper in trouble.

he speeches were 20 minutes each, but it took bro. Totty 45 minutes to get his speeches finished. This signifies how often Bayer was on the platform during bro. Totty's speeches.

Preachers present were: Earl West, John Iverson, A.G. Hobbs, Jr., J.W. Roberts.
