W. L. Totty vs D. L. Welch (United Pentecostal)
September 15, 1949
Sunbury, Pennsylvania

(Kenneth W. Franklin)

For three nights, Aug. 16-18 at Sunbury, Pa.

Mr. Welch is one of the most popular debaters in the United Pentecostal Church. Bro. Totty forcefully and logically defended the truth and exposed the errors of Welch. Showing a dissatisfaction with the way his representative was handling the discussion, Mr. Lewis Manual, local Pentecostal preacher and moderator, often interrupted bro. Totty by asking questions or making arguments that Welch overlooked.

One night was devoted to "miracles," but Welch would not debate the proposition and persisted in turning the discussion into a debate on baptism of the H.S. Bro. Totty plainly brought out the purpose of miracles in confirming the word. He continually challenged Welch or some other Pentecostal to raise the dead, since that was a command the same as healing (Matt. 10:8).

The next two nights were used to debate the "Jesus only" contention. Welch contended that the soul was the body. But bro. Totty had him tied up trying to answer which Jesus was at the right hand of God, the head of the church, the one who is now reigning and will eventually turn the kingdom over to the one that Welch says does not exist.

Bro. Totty's greatest power in debate is his ability to answer every question and every argument of his opponent. He is an able defender of the truth.

Mr. Manural, moderator for Welch, was not satisfied with the debate, and his challenge to debate was accepted by bro. Totty. They will debate at the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Sunbury, Pa., probably in Jan. 1950.
