W. L. Totty vs Calvin Gregory (Missionary Baptist)
February 11, 1954
North Springs, Tennessee

(By Eugene W. Clevenger)

Jan. 5-8 at North Springs, Jackson Co., Tenn.

Bro. Totty was at his best and Gregory at his weakest. The truth of God's plan of salvation by obedience was made to shine brilliantly in contrast to the theory of faith before and without baptism. Mr. Gregory's efforts were based solely on Cornelius and Alexander Campbell in the affirmative. His only negative was "Christ sent me not to baptize." Bro. Totty pressed Gregory to tell the time one is saved by faith, and his only reply was, "When one believes with all his heart." It was interesting to see three Baptist preachers take three different positions as to when faith saves. One said salvation is by faith alone, another by faith through prayer. Gregory refused to commit himself as to the precise time. Conduct was good.
