J. D. Tant vs John R. Clark (Missionary Baptist)
December 22, 1921
Dyersburg, Tennessee

(By J. W. Dunn)

Dec. 6-9 eight miles south of Dyersburg, Tenn.

Debated differences between the church of Christ and Miss. Baptist church. The crowds were larger than room in the church building.

Mr. Clark is an experienced debater. He seems to have developed a peculiar bitterness towards the church of Christ. His forte is in sophistry and ridicule. He is one of the bitterest men I have ever heard. This course brought him disfavor even among some of the Baptist people. To the contrary, I have never seen a man kinder and more considerate than bro. Tant. I have known bro. Tant since I was a lad, but I had never heard him in a religious discussion, and I seized this opportunity with a peculiar pleasure. It is difficult to be and do just what we should under such scurrilous attacks as came from Clark; but if all of us will pursue bro. Tant's course in this debate, the cause of truth will never suffer, but many friends will be won.

The men were uneven from every angle. Bro. Tant is the only man I ever moderated for that gave no occasion to speak, not even telling him time has expired. The crowds were very orderly and well behaved. Bro. Tant's brethren were more than well pleased. Clark's people were not satisfied with his defense of Baptist doctrine or his attitude in the debate.
