J. D. Tant vs John R. Clark (Missionary Baptist)
November 6, 1924
Dresden, Tennessee

(By C. B. Douthitt)

Oct. 14-17. A few weeks ago bro. Tant held a tent meeting four miles east of Dresden, Tenn. Baptized six and began a congregation. The Baptists got on a war path and called for John R. Clark to come and debate.

The 1st and 2nd days Clark affirmed general church propositions. He began by saying the sinner is saved by grace through faith. Bro. Tant said his brethren had been teaching that ever since the day of Pentecost. He challenged Clark to point out one blessing that any man had ever received on account of his faith before that faith expressed itself in some act. He showed that Clark's passages do not teach salvation by faith only. Clark then denied that they taught salvation by faith only. Bro. Tant then read from a "Salvation Solely By Faith" article in the Baptist Manual and insisted that Clark tell whether or not he and all other Miss. Baptist preachers had sworn they would teach the doctrine set forth in that manual. Clark made no reply to this. Baptist succession was abandoned by Clark when bro. Tant presented a chart showing the doctrine of the people through whom the chain ran.

The last two days bro. Tant affirmed the church of Christ was scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice. He used more than 100 scriptures for proof. Clark noticed 14. He spent the rest of his time misrepresenting, abusing and slandering the church of Christ.

If the church anywhere is molested by a mud slinger and slanderer and you want a man who can meet him in debate and at the same time can stay on the plane of a Christian gentleman, J. D. Tant will fill the bill. His ability to recall dates and events, his knowledge of history and the Bible, and his faith in the gospel and it's power to save make him an excellent defender of the truth. Hundreds of people heard the gospel in this debate who, probably, would never have heard it had there never been a debate in that community.
