Garvin Toms vs G. W. Hodges (Church of God)
January 1, 1944
Tampa Florida

(By Dabney Phillips)

Bro. Garvin Toms of the Nebraska Ave. Church, and G.W. Hodges, of the Church of God, engaged in a religious on May 8 in the Municipal Auditorium in Tampa, Fl. The "tongue" question was under discussion. Both men carried the debating on a high plane.

A glowing victory for the truth was evident. Mr. Hodges made frequent digressions from the subject. In his closing speech, ranting remarks were flung at water baptism. He made the mistake of introducing Greek of which he later admitted he did not know. Bro. Toms answered logically every one of the opposition. The members of the church in Tampa are well satisfied with the debate.

Mr. Hodges asked if bro. Toms or another representative of he church would meet one of their "big preachers" in the near future. It is needless to say that the challenge was accepted.

800 people attended, with several gospel preachers present.
