Harold Tremble vs L. H. Brown (Baptist)
October 30, 1947
Bemis, Tennessee

(By James R. Cole)

Harold Tremble vs L. H. Brown at Bemis, Tenn. Oct. 13-19.

On baptism, faith only, apostasy, estab. of the church." This as the first debate for both men. Good humor and splendid order prevailed and overflow crowds necessitated the use of loud speakers.

In his first affirmative that the church existed during the personal ministry of Jesus, Mr. Brown declared Judas was one of its charter members. In the same speech he argued that the church and kingdom are the same. When they came to apostasy bro. Tremble asked if Judas was in the kingdom, and Brown replied that he was. With telling force, then bro. Tremble showed that , according to Brown's argument on John 3:5; Judas was born into the kingdom and was, therefore, a demonstration of apostasy.

Bro. Tremble also asked Brown if what the Bible declared will happen, would happen. Brown said yes. Bro. Tremble then suggested that by his opponent and the Bible he had proved his proposition. "For," said he, "the scriptures teach that in the latter days some shall depart from the faith." From these blows Brown never recovered. True to Baptist form Brown ignored most of Tremble's arguments.

J. W. Evans of Brownsville, Miss wrote: "I enjoyed 3 nights attendance of the debate between Brown and Tremble. I believe bro. Tremble did a nice job of defending the truth against a blatant opponent.
