W. H. Trice vs W. F. Barron (First-Day Adventist)
March 16, 1911
Dyer, Tennessee

(C. C. Houston)

On Monday, Feb. 5, bro. W. H. Trice met W. F. Barron in a 6 day's debate in Dyer, Tenn. The debate was well attended and much interest manifested.

The first proposition was whether the kingdom of Christ was set up on the day of Pentecost or is to be set up at the second coming of Christ. Bro. Trice affirmed it was set up on Pentecost. His first argument was Matt. 16:18. "Church" and "kingdom" were used interchangeably. Barron denied this and said, "keys" were for the kingdom only, and that "church" and "kingdom" came from different Greek words that did not mean the same thing. Bro. Trice answered that the words "church" and "body" are used to describe the same institution (Col. 1:18) and yet they come from different Greek words. Christ is also called "Lamb" and "Lion." These come form different Greek words but they refer to the same person. The Hebrews received the kingdom (Heb. 12:28). How could they receive something that did not exist? John was "in the kingdom" (Rev. 1:9).

The second proposition was, "whether the wicked after the judgment should be tormented eternally or utterly destroyed as living beings." Bro. Trice showed that the wicked would be punished (Prov. 11:21; Isa. 13:11), some a borer punishment (Heb. 10:28-30). Where would it be? Partly on earth (Prov. 13:15; Matt. 8:28,29). Also after death, in judgment, eternally (Acts 17:30,31; II Cor. 5:10; Rev. 20:10,12,14,15). In Matt. 25:41 the wicked were to go "into eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels." Where is it? Rev. 20:10 - "the lake of fire ," the second death.

About the only answer Barron made was on the character of God, and the words, "slay," "perish," "consume," "burned up," and "destroy." His bare unsupported words against the word of God did not weigh much with outsiders.

The position of the Bible was set forth very forcibly on all the propositions, and it was undoubtedly a victory for truth. We have one member of the church in that community and the debate was electrical. They asked us to preach. Bro. Trice and I preached one night each.
