History

A History of the Church at Shady Grove

The church at Shady Grove was the first organized congregation in Lawrence County. I t was organized in October 1850 at the home of Brother Henry Foster and consisted of some seventy-five members. In 1851 a House of worship was built and they called it the Shady Grove Meeting House. After the first house became dilapidated, the congregation began worship at Brier Hill and continued to do so until a new building was built in 1926 on the current property. In 1961, an even more modern building was erected behind the existing building, which was then torn down. The church continues to worship in this building on North Henryville Road. The leaders and preachers who served in this congregation also served in others places in the County and were responsible for much of the ground work.
