James Martin Anderson


James Martin Anderson of Claysville passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at Huntsville Hospital.

Martin was born in the Swearengin Community near Grant on Feb. 6, 1938, to Fern Kennamer Anderson and John F. Anderson. He was a member of the Swearengin Church of Christ, where he had faithfully worshiped for his entire life. He was a teacher, song leader and served as treasurer. He loved to sing and for many years sang in a gospel quartet.

He was an avid farmer, raising cattle and hay.

Martin was a director for the North Alabama Electric Cooperative with the home office in Stevenson, Ala., and currently served as secretary-treasurer. He was a director on the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives, where he had served as chairman. From 2006 to 2012 he served as a director on the National Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives located in Arlington, Virginia.

Martin was a director of the Marshall Farmers Cooperative, a former director of the First Bank of the South in Grant and the Diana Singing Board, a member of the Board of Regents of Amridge University in Montgomery and a member of the advisory board of Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of KDS DAR School in Grant.

He retired from U. S. Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal in 1998, having worked for many years with the Hawk missile system and retired from SHORAD.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathryn Smith Anderson; brothers Von Anderson (Carol) of Guntersville and Ralph Anderson (Linda) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sisters Wanda Stricklin of Florence, Ala., Patricia Anderson of Boaz and five nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Fern Kennamer Anderson, and brother, David M. Anderson.

The funeral was Saturday, Oct. 20, 2017, at the Grant Memorial Chapel with burial at New Prospect Cemetery in the Swearengin Community.
