THE ORIGIN OF THE CHURCH

Matt 16:13-19

I. THE CHURCH OF THE LORD WAS FORESHADOWED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

Heb 9:11;   Heb 9:23; Heb 10:1: I Peter 1:10-12 Old Testament characters desired

to see the church.

 

II. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH/KINGDOM WAS  THE SUBJECT OF OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

Isa. 2:2-3; Heb 1:1-2; Acts 2:16-17;  Nebuchadnezzar's dream ‑Dan. 2:31-35;

Interpretation ‑Dan. 2:36-45; - Head of Gold ‑‑ Babylonian ‑‑ Nebuchadnezzar, 606 B.C., fell 536 B.C. - Breast and arm of Silver ‑‑ Medo-Persian ‑‑ Established by Cyrus,  -  King of Persia and Darius, King of Media, fell in 330.B.C. -  Belly and

thighs of Brass ‑‑ Alexander the Great ‑‑ Divided among 4  generals in 323 B.C. -  Legs and Iron, feet Iron and Clay ‑‑ Romans ‑‑ First century B.C. "In the days of these kings.'' - Matt. 3:1-2;  WHAT DAYS?  Luke 3:1-2;

 

III.  THE CHURCH OF CHRIST WAS NOT ESTABLISHED BY JOHN THE BAPTIST

Matt. 3:1-2  ``at hand'' - Matt. 11:11

IV. THE CHURCH OF CHRIST WAS NOT ESTABLISHED DURING THE PERSONAL MINISTRY OF JESUS

Mark 1:15  Jesus - Matt 10:7  Apostles  - Luke 10:9  - Matt. 6:9-10  pray for it   Matt 16:18;  Matt 18:1-3; Mark 9:1;  Acts 1:6; 

V. THE CHURCH OF CHRIST WAS ESTABLISHED ON PENTECOST

The kingdom was to begin and law go forth from Jerusalem (Isa. 2:2-3). - Luke

24:47;  The law went forth on Pentecost from Jerusalem (Acts 2:37-38) - Pentecost,

therefore, was the beginning (Acts 2:1-4; 11:15). - The kingdom was to come with

power (Mark 9:1). - The power was to come with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). - The

Holy Spirit came on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). - Therefore, the kingdom came on

Pentecost! - Isa. 2:2-3; Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:49; Pentecost

marks the beginning. - of the Christian Age - of the New Covenant - of the church

and kingdom - of gospel preaching - of the remissionof sins.
