Obituary for Charles Cotten

Charles Layton Cotten, 91, of Hendersonville, died December 1, 2015. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruby Mai Cotten. He is survived by his children Danny Cotten, of Nashville, Pam (David) Connell, of Marietta, Georgia, Rickey Cotten, of Nashville, Alan (Marsha) Cotten, of Hendersonville; grandchildren Brent (Angie) Cotten, Shea Cotten, Michael Howell, Kristen (Nathan) Garroway, Amy (Alex) McKinlay, Adam (Emily) Connell, Chris (Hannah) Cotten; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Additionally, he is survived by one brother, Harold Clifton Cotten, of Manchester, Tennessee.

Mr. Cotten was born November 19, 1924, in Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee, the son of Charlie and Mary Lou Cotten. He was a veteran of World War II. He served in France and Germany in 1944 and 1945, with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, notably at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action near Pattenbach, Germany.

Following his marriage on July 4, 1947, he and his wife lived in Germany for four years while he worked in military intelligence and she did secretarial work for the Army. Back in the States, they moved to Nashville, making their home in the Inglewood neighborhood for more than thirty years before moving to Hendersonville. Mr. Cotten owned and operated his own roofing business, the Charles L. Cotten Roofing Company, in business for more than fifty years.

Mr. Cotten was a member of the Church of Christ. He was baptized in June 1954 by Bro. Boone Douthitt at the Duke Street Church of Christ in East Nashville. For the rest of his life, he gave his time and energy to the work of the Church, especially in the work of teaching the Bible and supporting preachers of the Gospel.
