Stay Focused in 2008

Stay Focused in 2008

The other day I went upstairs to get something, I got something, brought it back downstairs; then I realized I did not bring back what I went for.  Has this ever happened to you; to get the wrong thing or totally forget what you went after?

That was a humorous moment, but it got me to thinking about “spiritual focus.” It is so easy for us to get spiritually sidetracked. Satan throws all kinds of distractions at us, and, if we are not careful, we forget what life is all about.   Notice 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, which states: “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” This should remind us of staying focused, individually, in our faith.  It is equally important for us to stay focused as a church body. We must remember whom we are and why we exist – to bring glory to God. Also, remember the passage found in Luke 19:10, which states: “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” As we love God, we want to help people come to salvation in Christ. We want to serve one another in brotherly love. We are encouraged to let our “little Christian light” shine in this world of darkness, and as we shine, the light from the cross of Christ shines, and is a remembrance of His powerful resurrection. Paul writes, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10).

Let us, as a church family, stay focused in 2008. Let’s keep our eyes on the cross of Christ, because no one was more focused on His mission than Jesus. Let’s be used for God to bring people to His marvelous grace and mercy through Christ.

This year may prove to be one of the greatest years the church has ever experienced – we must stay focused on this mission all year long.
