HEAVEN & HELL

HEAVEN AND HELL ARE REAL

Rev. 20:11-15

Purpose: To realize that we will live forever somewhere.

I. Introduction:
    A. The preacher for the most watched religious program in America (Joel Osteen) refuses to
preach about hell. Nor will you ever here him talk about any punishment for sin, same sex
marriage, abortion, etc. He won’t say they are wrong. But the Bible does.
    B. This is not unique. Even within the churches of Christ some are distorting hell as being a
place of temporary torment, not eternal. Popular to say it is temporary.
   C. But preaching should be balanced. Seek & save from what? Eternal damnation!
   D. A survey a few years ago among 500 ministers revealed the following: 69% denied there
was a hell; 41% denied there was a heaven; 80% said one should not teach on hell. Is it
any wonder that people are not afraid of hell? Most don’t know anything about it. But just
because we don’t hear about it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.
    E. Friends, heaven and hell are both real. Let’s see what the Bible says.

II. About Heaven:
     A. Revelation 21 is a good place to start. Descriptions that we would understand.
     B. Jesus says that our reward will be in heaven. Matt. 5:11-12.
     C. David spoke of heaven as a place of reunion with his infant son. 2 Sam. 12:23.
     D. Good things will be there and evil things will be absent. 1 Pet. 1:4; Rev. 21:3, 4, 7.

III. About Hell:
       A. Our aim should be to be pleasing and escape the terror of God. 2 Cor. 5:9-11.
       B. Hell is eternal. Matt. 25:46. Weeping/gnashing of teeth. Matt. 25:30.
       C. Hell is a place of eternal fire. Rev. 20:15. Fire is not quenched. Mark 9:46.
       D. Hell is a place of no relief. Rev. 14:9-11.
       E. Hell is a place of no hope. Heb. 10:28-31.

IV. Conclusion:
      A. Most people think they will go to heaven or just go out of existence. One survey (Harris
2003) said 29% of non-Christians and only 75% of Christians believed they would go to
heaven. Only 1% thought they would go to hell. The rest???
     B. Charlie Peace was a criminal who are condemned to death in England. On the morning of
his execution he walked to his death. Before him went the prison chaplain, routinely and
sleepily reading some Bible verses. The criminal touched the preacher and asked what he
was reading. "The Consolations of Religion," was the replay. Charlie Peace was s
