LORD GIVETH AND TAKETH

 The Lord Giveth and The Lord Taketh Away

 

Introduction: 

 

Job 1:8  And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

Job 1:9  Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Job 1:10  Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

Job 1:11  But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

Job 1:12  And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

Job 1:13  And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

Job 1:14  that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;

Job 1:15  and the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Job 1:16  While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Job 1:17  While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Job 1:18  While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;

Job 1:19  and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Job 1:20  Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

Job 1:21  and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

Job 1:22  In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

 

1.  God held up Job as an ideal servant - perfect, upright, fears God, turns away from evil.

 

2.  Satan challenges God - accuses Him of protecting Job, putting a hedge about him so that he was a puppet or robot.

 

3.  God allows Satan to do what he would to Job but not harm him.

 

4.  In short order all of Job's servants, animals and even all of his children were taken or destroyed.

 

5.  Job would not, did not blame God - did not charge God foolishly.  Job recognized that everything that he had came from God.  He came into this world with nothing and he will leave this world with nothing - as we all will.

 

II.  JOB: A GOOD MAN WITH BIG TROUBLE

 

1.  Does trouble make the man or does it reveal the man?   What does this mean?

 

1Pe 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1Pe 1:4  unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

1Pe 1:5  who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1Pe 1:6  Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, ye have been put to grief in manifold trials,

1Pe 1:7  that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

 

2.  What does fire do to the refining of gold?  What do trials and temptations do to our faith?

 

3.  Job's life at the first was filled with the good times.  Then, came the disasters and the loss of everything.

 

4.  Good people suffer just the same as evil people.  Hurricane Katrina was no respecter of persons, wealth or anything else.

 

5.  God uses the circumstances of life to refine, purify, develop, true character.  They will determine or reveal who and what we are or what kind of faith we really have.

 

6.  What are the two kinds of suffering?  as or because of evil doing  -  because of the evil of others or outside circumstances

 

7.  The calamities that befell Job happened within one day and came with lightening speed.  All happened when everything was going so well for Job.  They happened when Job least expected it.

 

 Pro 27:1  Boast not thyself of tomorrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Jam 4:14  whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Mat 6:34  Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

 

8.  Each day of our lives should be approached how?

 

Heb 13:5  Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.

Heb 13:6  So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear: What shall man do unto me?

 

9.  Be content with what things ye have.

 

III.  DIVINE PREPROGATIVE: GOD GIVES AND GOD TAKES   AWAY.

 

1.  There are rights and privileges that belong to God because He is God.  These may be called "God's Prerogatives".

 

PREROG'ATIVE, [L. proerogativa, precedence in voting; proe, before, and rogo, to ask or demand.] An exclusive or peculiar privilege. A royal prerogative, is that special pre-eminence which a king has over all other persons, and out of the course of the common law, in right of his regal dignity. It consists in the possession of certain rights which the king may exercise to the exclusion of all participation of his subjects; for when a right or privilege is held in common with the subject, it ceases to be a prerogative.

 

2.  What one statement by Job that indicates that Job fully understood the prerogatives of God?

 

3.   Everything God does, He does through the motivation of his Love.  What can we conclude about what happens to us or what is happening in the world?

 

Rom 8:28  And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.

 

4.  What did Paul that we know about God?   Did he say that we understand why, how, when, where, which of everything?

 

5.  What assurance do we have in the end of all things:

 

IV.  BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD.

 

1.  When Job lost everything he had, would it have been easier on Job if he, himself, had died?  He suffered much more by surviving than by dying.

 

2.  Oh, isn't it easy to bless God when everything is going well? 

 

3.  Job tore his clothing - symbolic of his torn life and great suffering and grieving.

 

4.  Job proved that he was worthy of God's confidence in him.

 

5.  Job didn't know what had transpired behind the scenes but he trusted God in everyway.
