Bobby Rhodes (Nashville) - September 1, 2011


RHODES, James Robert "Bobby"Age 89, passed from this life on September 1, 2011 after a long and well fought battle with cancer. Born in Nashville, TN, he was the son of the late Robert Alpheus Rhodes and Ethel Pyland Rhodes, and husband of the late Irby A. Wilkes Rhodes. He is survived by daughters, Deborah L. Rhodes, Murrayville, GA, Benita J. Rhodes and sons, Robert W. (Woody) Rhodes of Nashville and Eric A. Rhodes of Ashland City, TN; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. After graduating from Hume Fogg High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and after 38 years of active and reserve service, retired as Chief Boatswain Mate. A Pearl Harbor survivor, he served his country throughout WWII. He was assigned duty on the USS Philadelphia, USS Fitch, USS Boxer and USS Sewanee among others. He was present at the invasions of North Africa, Southern France and Celarno, Italy as well as several additional campaigns. He was assigned to a Navy liaison group and temporarily served on Gen. George Patton's staff. He served as Coxswain to Admiral H. Kent Hewitt and was later assigned to Admiral Hewitt's staff in charge of headquarter security, staff aid and chauffer to Commodore L. Doughty, Jr. For his service to his country, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Defense Medal, American Area Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Area Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal and three commendations. After mustering out of the Navy in 1946, he worked for United Airlines while living in Boston, MA. After returning to Nashville, he worked for and retired after 38 years with Nashville/Piedmont Gas Co. A life long member of the church of Christ, he served his Lord and Savior in service at the 12th Ave., Trinity Lane, Buena Vista, Kings Lane, Bordeaux, Whites Creek, Ashland City, Scottsboro, Stewarts Creek, Milford Rd., Charlotte Ave. and Charlotte Heights churches of Christ. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2 p.m., at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hiclory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road, by John Temple, Darryll Blankenship & Frank Hollingsworth. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Active Pallbearers: family & friends. Honorary Pallbearers: H. Douglas Holliday, M.D., Mark Peters, M.D., James H. Baker, M.D. and Lester Porter, M.D. Naval Reserve Buddy's, Elders and Deacons of the Charlotte Heights, Scottsboro and Whites Creek churches of Christ, and the employees of Nashville/Piedmont Gas Co. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Potter Children's Home & Family Ministries, Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, American Cancer Society , and Guillian Berre Syndrome Research.
