History

THE COUNTY LINE CHURCH OF CHRIST

Attendance records have been preserved since 1886, but it is believed that the church existed for some time prior to that, based on the number of members on the roles when the first record of members was made in 1886. That record lists names of 57 members with a separate listing of male and female. There were 20 males and 37 females. Some of the men have 'bishop' or 'deacon' written beside their names, indicating the church had an eldership during part of that time. Also of interest is that in some years there is only a notation of 'deacon' without any 'bishops'. Other footnotes beside some names reveal those who 'moved away', were 'out of order', 'withdrawn from', 'discarded' or 'restored'. Earliest preserved records from 1886 reveal the church was known as the Pine Grove Church of Christ but that name was changed in 1889 to Shady Grove. At that time the church was located in Crenshaw County, Alabama at the intertion of what is now Hickory Grove Road and Rock Hill Church Road in the northwest corner. Membership records along with informational footnotes were kept by the church from 1886 until 1906 at the old location followed by a long skip until it resumed in 1935 with the church already in a new location in Butler County. Membership records and other noteworthy information have been kept regularly since 1935 until present.

It is believed the original wooden building at the location above in Crenshaw County dating back to at least 1886, was destroyed in a storm. The decision was then made to build a new structure at the present site just inside Butler County, a short distance away. The new location at the Butler and Crenshaw County lines resulted in renaming it the County Line Church of Christ. Copies of a recorded deed exist showing a land purchase from Callie D. Tindal to the Church of Christ on August 6, 1934. Interesting excerpts from the land deed state that "no society or organization whatever for religious work, worship or service, other than the Church of Christ shall meet on or in any building erected on this lot. No music shall be used other than singing, nor methods of raising money adopted by the said church using this property not laid down by apostolic precept or example in the New Testament; all entertainments except the Church in it's worship, are excluded from the use of the property." Such wording makes it obvious that the land was sold for the express purpose of erecting a building that would be used only for true Christain worship, without exception.

Since 1935, the County Line Church of Christ has been at the same location at 1596 County Line Church Road, Honoraville, Alabama just inside the Butler County line. Some of the present members are descendents or relatives of those whose names are recorded on the 1886 membership roll. New Testament worship is conducted by the church at it's assemblies. They meet on a regular basis with services on Sunday and Wednesday. At present the church hosts two gospel meetings annually.
