God Longs for You to Know Him
1/4/2018

"Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving-kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD" (Jeremiah 9:23-24).

Listen to the words of a twenty-year-old preacher named Charles Spurgeon: "The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the Word, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls His Father."  Our Creator wants us to move from knowing him dimly to knowing Him vividly.  In (Luke 19:41-44) Jesus wept because the Jews did not realize He came from God. He wept because the consequences of their blindness kept them from knowing and experiencing the peace and forgiveness of God.  The consequence of rejecting the knowledge and the understanding of God's love resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 by Rome.

That God deeply longs for us to know Him is clearly revealed in the following statement: "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:23-24).  Furthermore, God promises that you will find Him if you seek Him: "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened" (Luke 11:9-10).

The question for us is "Do we actually know God?"  J. I. Packer, in his classic work "Knowing God," uses a study in Daniel to identify four measurements that help determine whether we actually know God:

(1) Those who really know God have great energy for Him

(2) Those who really know God think great thoughts about Him

(3) Those who really know God demonstrate boldness for Him

(4) Those who really know God find great contentment in Him

The only one who can determine if one knows God in these ways is each individual in his or her relationship with God.  We cannot answer for each other.  We will never know God completely, although we can know Him sufficiently for our salvation. How well do we know our heavenly Father?

"That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none besides me: I am Jehovah, and there is none else" (Isaiah 45:6).

SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Seek ye first the kingdom of God

 And His righteousness

And all these things shall be added unto you

 Hallelu, Halleluiah

Man does not live by bread alone

 But by every word

That proceeds from the mouth of God

 Hallelu, Halleluiah

Ask and it shall be given unto you

 Seek and ye shall find

Knock and the door shall be opened unto you

 Hallelu, Halleluiah

Seek ye first the kingdom of God

 And His righteousness

And all these things shall be added unto you

 Hallelu, Halleluiah

Man does not live by bread alone

 But by every word

That proceeds from the mouth of God

 Hallelu, Halleluiah
