What's Heaven Like?
7/2/2016

When our three children Destini, Damon, and Dustin were teens they would rather do anything in the world than ask me a question.  That was because I usually answered them with a question. My thinking in doing this was to help them work through life to find the answer on their own.  Sometimes it was amazing to see them do this. Sometimes, it came back to bite me, especially when their answer wasn't the answer I wanted.

However, before the teen years somewhere in their early grade school age each one had the same question, "What's heaven like?" Rather than give them an answer I asked them some questions to help them visualize it in a way that would be meaningful for them. Their answers inspired this song.

"What's Heaven Like?"

My child of six came to me one day,

he said, "Mommy I've got something to say.

I've been thinking of this place to see,

will you answer this question for me?

He said, "Mommy, what's heaven like?"

"Can I roller skate, can I ride my bike?"

"Mommy, are there streets of gold,

will I see the stories of the people told?"

"And mommy will you be there

in case I get a little scared?"

I told my son think of a happy place,

where he could laugh and with the wind could race.

Where he felt love and safe from the storm,

and they talked of the day when he was born.

Is it like Grandma's macaroni and cheese,

or when we laugh at Grandpa's great big sneeze?

Is it like when dad wrestles with us,

or when we ride on his back like a horse or bus?

He said, "Mommy, what's heaven like?"

"Can I roller skate, can I ride my bike?"

"Mommy, are there streets of gold,

will I see the stories of the people told?"

"And mommy will you be there

in case I get a little scared?"

I told my son think of a happy place,

where he could laugh and with the wind could race.

Where he felt love and safe from the storm,

and they talked of the day when he was born.

"Is it like the weekend campings we go,

or when we all go out to play in the snow?"

"Is it like the zoo, the farm, or the park,

or when you hold my hand when it gets dark?

He said, "Mommy, what's heaven like?"

"Can I roller skate, can I ride my bike?"

"Mommy, are there streets of gold,

will I see the stories of the people told?"

"And mommy will you be there

in case I get a little scared?"

I told my son think of a happy place,

where he could laugh and with the wind could race.

Where he felt love and safe from the storm,

and they talked of the day when he was born.

With his eyes real big he came running to me

And he yelled, "I know what heaven will be!"

"For the things I love I won't have to roam,

For heaven will be like my home."

He said, "Mommy, I know what heavens like,

I can roller skate, I can ride my bike."

"Mommy, there are streets of gold,

and I'll see the stories of the people told."

"And mommy, I know that you'll be there,

in case I get a little scared."

..... "Mommy, I know that you'll be there,

in case I get a little scared."

A Sunday school teacher asked the children in her class,

"If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and

gave all my money to the church, would I get into Heaven?"

"No!" the children answered.

"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and

kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into Heaven?"

Again the answer was "No!"

"Well," she continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?"

A five-year old boy shouted out, "You gotta be dead!"
