The La Fayette Church of Christ dates back to 1912 when Charles Holder conducted a tent meeting in the area. The church began meeting together as a result of this effort and in 1915 moved into its first permanent building on what would later be known as Daugherty Street. In 1953, as it was blessed with continued growth, the congregation moved into a modern brick building where it continues to meet today a the corner of West Main and Cherokee Streets.
Some of the men who have served the La Fayette Church of Christ as ministers have been: Charles Holder, Paul Buchanan, S.H. Proffitt, Sam Connally, L.H. Reavis, Homer Daniels, R.A. Zahn,Wlliam Lybrand, Aruna Clark, R.E. Wright, Flavil Hall, L.E. Pryor, E.G. Collins, E.A. Lowery, W.C. Phillips, William Parsons, Fred Mosley, Don McWhorter, L.A. Hatley, Wendell Jacobs, Curtis Cates, Stan Price, Sorrell Wesson, Frank Yates, Barry Gilreath Sr., P.L. Manning, Lynn Headrick, Norman Ewell, Terry York, Edwin Kearly, Bill Dillon, Joe Riggs, Tom Harrison, Eddie Boggess, and Aaron Pope.
In its history, the La Fayette Church of Christ has produced three gospel preachers: Marvin Crouch Jr., Leslie Shadrick, and Ken Bolden. The La Fayette congregation has also supported various missionary efforts such as James and Randy Judd in Malawi, Africa; Bob Bryson with the Central American Missions; and Scott Shanahan in Micronesia, & Kerry Sword in the Ukraine.
The La Fayette Church of Christ has been very blessed since its early days in 1912. Much good has been accomplished by this faithful group of Christians. However, no group of God's people has ever succeeded by resting on the accomplishments of the past; they build upon them. As the La Fayette church of Christ looks to the future, it continues to "press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ" (Phillipians 3:14). The history of the La Fayette Church of Christ continues to be written and will continue until the Lord returns to take it home. Until then, it will not grow "weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not." (Galatians 6:9)
