Many believe they can make the church into whatever they desire.  Some of the fastest growing churches promise to be "all things to all people." Sadly, the idea of the New Testament being Christ's authority for His church hasn't even occurred to them. Jesus said He would build His church (Matt. 16:18). He died for His church, purchasing it with His own blood (Eph. 5:25; Acts 20:28). Since none of us have nail scarred hands and feet, and since none of us shed blood and died for the church, then none of us have the right to change Christ's church into what we desire. We dare not "play church," and disregard His desires found in the New Testament. His church meets the needs of all people, then and now!

God's authority must be taken seriously. It's highly presumptuous to think we can determine what pleases God: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isa. 55:8,9). When the tabernacle was being constructed, Moses was warned by God, "See that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown on the mountain" (Ex. 25:40). These things were a "copy and shadow of the heavenly things" (Heb. 8:4-7). If it was necessary to follow God's pattern for the "copy and shadow," can we afford to be any less careful with the reality and substance these shadows were pointing to? Concerning the better New Covenant, the Hebrews writer says: "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to things we have heard, lest we drift away"(Heb. 2:1). He then declares we must confine ourselves under God's will found in this New Covenant: "He takes away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have been sanctified"(Heb. 10:9-10). Of course, "that will" is the "second" or New Covenant. We do not live under part or parts of the Old Covenant, but under His New Covenant -- the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul warned, "Stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter"(2 Thess. 2:15). This refers to New Testament instruction, which is our only authority for faith and practice. If we want to be "of Christ," then we must follow His desires and instructions, submitting ourselves within its confines only.
