AN ARTICLE FROM A PREACHER: IS IT WISE TO SKIP BIBLE CLASSES?

The use of additional bible classes separate from the corporate worship service is a long-standing tradition practiced by the church. In researching the origin of bible classes, one will find various historical versions of the beginning of "Sunday school" ranging from the early 1700's to 1800's in both Great Britian and America.

In modern history, the church has offered bible studies in the hour preceding Sunday morning worship along with additional classes on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. It has also become somewhat traditional to consider these additional times of bible study as optional, leaving it up to the individual whether to attend or not.

When considering the bible class, do the Scriptures give us any guidance concerning our obligation if any, to attend some or all bible classes offered by the church? As one begins to read the book of Proverbs, they quickly realize the overwhelming amount of encouragement for one to seek knowledge and wisdom.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Prov. 9:10)

In the New Testament we read of a group of Christians who searched the Scriptures daily in order to confirm what the Apostles had been teaching. (Acts 17:11)

By constant and consistent exposure to God's word, we build faith, hope and confidence in God's promises. "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God." (1 John 5:13)

Even though self-study plays an important part in gaining spiritual knowledge, there are times when we need to be taught by others. (2 Tim. 2:2)

So now we must ask, "Is it unwise to willfully disregard an opportunity to increase my knowledge about God and His will for my life?" We return to the Proverbs and learn that "fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Prov. 1:7)

Can it be that we are acting foolish when refusing an opportunity to increase spiritual knowledge by attending a bible class? Of course, such a discussion must include the encouragement received by Hebrews 10:24-25. "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."
