How Great is Your God?

How Great is Your God?

It's hard for us to comprehend the size of the sun.  At a young age children perceive the sun as a shiny circle the size of a quarter.  As we grow and learn we find out how many miles across it is or how many earths could fit inside it.  This helps us to make sense of its immensity.  We then can go on to realize the sun is a medium sized star among millions.  Amazing!  The more we learn the greater the sun, galaxy and universe seem to grow in scope, size and complexity.

This is the way it is with our understanding of God.  The more we realize our sinful state, the greater His mercy seems to us.  The more we learn about His creation, the greater our appreciation for the power and majesty of our Creator.  The more we learn of His love, the greater our love and obedience grows.

In the book, Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis the young child Lucy comes back into Narnia after being away for a year.  In her first encounter with the great lion, Lucy says, "Aslan you're bigger."  Aslan responds by saying, "That is because you are older, little one."  Confused, Lucy asks, "Not because you are?"  Aslan answers, "I am not.  But every year you grow, you will find me bigger."

We couldn't have a much better illustration to understand this Bible truth.  God is unchanging, but as we grow in knowledge and faith, God will appear to be more loving, more powerful, and greater than He was earlier in our walk with Him.  Simply put, just like the sun God will be bigger the more we come to know Him.

If your view of God and His attributes have not changed much over the years, perhaps you have not been growing as you should.  Think about this and "make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love."  After all God is much bigger than a shiny quarter in the sky.
