 The Church History

The Sega church of Christ has a God-breathed beginning. One that is straight from Bakersfield California (USA) to Sega, Kenya. Our sweet odor came in the form of Brother Matthew Cruise and his beautiful wife Barbara, both who are members of the East California Avenue church of Christ, in Bakersfield, California.

Brother Matthew came to Kenya only a few months after recovering from Valley Fever, a serious ailment of body and mind. He came to check on work that together with brothers' Bill Carter, Jersey Trice and the Cypress church of Christ in Cypress, California had initiated in Bumala, Kenya, whose aim was to help women empower themselves economically and fight poverty with the hope of introducing Christ to their lives.

He was met at the airport in Nairobi where among many, he met a young man in his twenties, whose name is Erick Otieno Ongech. Erick was in no way part of the main team, but caught the eye of Brother Matthew. After a grueling road trip to Bumula with a short stopover in Sega, they arrived in Bumula.

After meeting with the church in Bumula and later the church in Rongai, he was saddened to learn that the Evangelist, Alfred Kasiano of the Bumula church had passed away. The church was then in the process of growing. Even though there was a sign in the major tribal languages that stated "You do not have to be a member of the church of Christ to join the ladies group to get support." Upon his return from Kenya, Matthew realized that things had really changed and those who were given the mandate to manage the mission programs had their own selfish interests.

He then shared with Erick on how best they can move on with the work and after getting all the information that he needed, he made a decision to start again in Sega; Erick's hometown situated 8km from Bumala.

Brother Matthew before enrolling the Sega church on the "The Lord's Way" website, he asked Erick if he could get its history first. After receiving the history, it was apparent that the Sega church was in fact the Pentecostal church of Christ.

He then began a series of studies on the internet, sent books, the Ambassador Series and several messages dealing with Conversion of the congregants. The Ongech family took full responsibility of this great transformation.

On July 7th 2010 after series of study, the Ongech Family got baptized into Christ. The problem was who was going to baptize them; they found Paul Auma at that time in a nearby village who was an Evangelist and the Sega church of Christ joined that great roll call of the assemblies of the churches of Christ.

Paul served as the Evangelist for the Sega church of Christ for 9months after which Brother Kevin took over from him since he had to seek asylum in Uganda following a family land tussle.

The church started with 7 members and has a steady growth of new converts because we have copied the rest of the first assembly of Saints, we are going house to house and are having favor with all the people and the Lord is adding to us daily.

The congregation currently stands at 95 adults (45 women and 23 men) and 27 children. Total number is 95 members.

GOD BE PRAISED!!!
