Welcome to the
State Street Church of Christ (Bristol, VA)
History

The Church was established 33AD with the local congregation in Bristol established 1937. The first meeting of the local church was in a hospital room in April 1937. Soon after the church met in an apartment and later in a rented room on the ond floor of 500 State Street, above the Owl Drug Store.
In 1942, a two-story residence at 512 Sixth Street, Bristol, VA was purchased and converted into a meeting place. At this time, the church hired its first full-time evangelist, Thomas H. Burton. From 1942 to the present, a great deal of progress and change has taken place:
1945 - A lot at West State and 18th Streets, Bristol, VA was purchased and construction of our present building began and was completed March 1947.
1955 - Property at 804 Southside, Bristol VA purchased as a residence for evangelist.
1958 - Property adjoining the building was purchased and converted into classrooms
1963 - Property in Maple Hill Subdivision, Bristol, TN was purchased as a replacement residence for evangelist
1970 - 21 families from State Street living in areas east of Bristol established the East Bristol Church of Christ
1972 - A marquis style sign purchased and installed at church building
1984 - Property adjoining church parking lot, purchased and renovated into what we know as the 'Annex'. It is used for fellowship and classrooms.
1986 - Property at 17140 Newton Street, Bristol, VA purchased as residence for additional evangelist
1989 - Property at 18th and Newton Streets purchased. Residence moved to make room for additional packing. This lot was paved in 2003.
1990 - Property at 22 Peters Street purchased for future expansion
1993 - Property on corner of Peters & Newton Streets purchased for future expansion. The old house was removed to make room for outdoor fellowship area.
