Dix River Church of Christ
Purpose

The Dix River Church of Christ in Stanford is determined to worship God in Spirit and Truth. We believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God and we will only abide by the doctrine that it teaches.

We will "speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent". As pertaining to religious issues, we will not adhere to nor follow man's ideas or opinions. We will pattern ourselves after the church that we read about in God's word.

Listed below and on the following pages are New Testament examples of how the Lord's church was organized and how worship was carried out. These examples and verses document our reasoning:

The New Testament church was built according to a pattern.

Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

II John 9-11 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

The New Testament church was built according to prophecy.

Acts 2:1-47

The New Testament church was a part of God's eternal purpose.

Ephesians 3:8-11 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

The New Testament church was built by Jesus Christ and bought by His blood.

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock (statement) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

The New Testament church had a specific organization.

Christ is the Head. (Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:18)

The New Testament is its constitution. (Mark 16:15, Galatians 1:6-9)

Each congregation is autonomous. (Acts 14:23, Philippians 1:1)

Elders are appointed to oversee local churches. (Acts 14:23,

Acts 20:17-28, Ephesians 4:11, Titus 1:5-7, I Peter 5:1-4)

Deacons are appointed as servants of the church. (I Timothy 3:8-13)

Ministers or evangelists are to preach the Gospel. (Acts 21:8)

The New Testament church had a specific pattern of worship.

They met on the first day of the week. (Acts 2:1, 20:7)

They ate the Lord's supper. (Matthew 26:26-28, Acts 2:42)

They prayed. (Acts 2:42, I Timothy 2:1-8)

They sang. (Ephesians 5:18-19, Colossians 3:16-17)

They were edified by the preaching of God's word. (II Tim. 4:2-4)

They gave of their means. (I Corinthians 16:1-2)

The New Testament church had a three fold work to do.

To preach the Gospel to the whole world. (Matthew 28:19-20)

To edify the saved. (Ephesians 4:12, Romans 1:15)

To help the needy, both saint and sinner. (James 1:27)

The New Testament church had a common hope.

Their citizenship was in Heaven. (Philippians 3:20-21)

They awaited the coming of the Lord. (I Thessalonians 5:1-11)

They were "strangers and pilgrims on this earth". (I Peter 2:11)

They awaited the "crown of life" at the Last Day. (II Timothy 4:6-8)

The New Testament church had a specific plan of entrance.

One had to hear the Gospel. (Mark 16:15, Hebrews 11:6)

One had to believe the Gospel. (I Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 1:16)

One had to repent of his sins. (Luke 24:47, Acts 2:38, Acts 3:19)

One had to confess that "Jesus Christ is the Son of God".

(Matthew 10:32-33; 16:16, Acts 8:37, II Timothy 6:12)

One had to be baptized.

This was a burial in water. (Romans 6:4-5, Colossians 2:12)

It was for the "remission of sins". (Matthew 26:28)

It was "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit".

(Matthew 28:19)

It was to put one into Christ.(Galatians 3:26-27, Ephesians 1:3)

It "saves" us. (I Peter 3:21, Acts 22:16, Revelation 1:5)

It was only for accountable persons. (I John 3:4, Romans 3:23)
