Welcome to the
Morton Street Church of Christ
History

 HISTORICAL  SPOTLIGHT

Morton Street church of Christ was established during the year 1955 with the first service held in its new facility on June 5th of that year.  The Central church of Christ and the Armstrong church of Christ (now

Park Ave. church) joined together to begin the Morton Street Work.

There were 134 present for Bible study at 10 a.m. that first Sunday.  The worship service was followed by a dinner on the grounds and with an open house.

The church began with 10 Bible teachers, a preacher and 84 charter members.  Three elders were appointed in the fall of 1955.  These were Lyle Yeargin, Elmo Allen, and Ellery Ballou.   J. C. Gray, Lyndoll Hurley, and Haskell Williams were selected as deacons.  Johnny Jackson served as the first preacher and continued until the summer of 1958.

In 1959 additional classrooms were added to provide space for the growing congregation.

          The
Morton Street congregation has been active in the mission field since its beginning.  It has supported missionaries in Italy, Africa, and Al Henderson's work in Taiwan and China.  It now supports the television broadcasts "Truth in Love," "In Search of the Lord's Way," and the "Gospel Broadcasting Netword."  David Hambrick, from the Bear Valley Bible Institute, and the Tipton Home are also being supported by Morton Street.
